Woongjin group has chosen Cambodia as the primary region for its environment/health campaign
(Sep. 19, 2006)

Woongjin Group conducts an international environment/health campaign in Cambodia from Sep. 18 to 23. To the campaign participate persons of over 30, including Cambodian college students, Woongjin Group Vice-chairman Junghyeong Jo and other officers, President of Geological Society of Korea Seokwon Choi, President of Korean Women's Environmental Network Youngsuk Park, TV actor Dahun Yun. This group of volunteers visits an orphanage to present gifts and contributes medicines to a Korean-operated hospital in Cambodia in addition to drilling wells for residents living in poor conditions as part of Woongjin Group's campaign for ‘environmental protection of the earth and improvement of children's welfare'.
Woongjin group has chosen Cambodia as the primary region for its environment/health campaign, as the country is one of the most backward countries in Asia suffering from shortage and poor quality of water and a large part of its residents live exposed to the danger of infectious diseases. Although children can be recovered from some illnesses just with drinking clean water, there are a number of children in the country dying from drinking polluted water, thus requiring for improvement of water quality urgently.

On the occasion of this visit, Woongjin Group will bore about 30 wells and teach how to manage them to Cambodian residents in cooperation with Geological Society of Korea and Korea Women's Environmental Network. An officer of the group said that they would continue to drill wells for Cambodian residents until the number of wells reach to 1,000. Wells drilled by the group are expected to contribute to the wellbeing of residents and improvement of public health. The volunteer group will also visit an orphanage with 120 orphans to help the asylum improve sanitation conditions and plant fruit trees, such as banana and mango trees in the expectation that the trees bear fruits in three years so that children there could eat them. The volunteers will also visit a Korean-operated hospital that renders free medical service to present medicines.
''Environment/Health Campaign for Cambodia has been designed by Woongjin Group in a humanitarian effort to supply clean water to residents who live drinking water of very poor quality. Beginning with 30 wells this year, we will expand the campaign throughout the whole area of Cambodia pursuant to needs and responses of residents,” said Lee Jin, Vice-chairman for environment, Woongjin Group and the former deputy minister of Environment.
Activities of Woongjin Group to contribute to international community are expected to advertise Korean culture to foreign countries and form a good image of Korea on local residents of Asian countries. Woongjin Coway has chosen 10 graduates of Hanoi College of Engineering and Bangladeshi College of Engineering to pay each a scholarship of 70 million Won a year, 350 million Won in total for five years beginning from 2006. These students currently take a master's or doctor's course in new materials, IT, electric and electronics, and economy at Gongju National University. Woongjin Thinkbig has donated books to Korean Culture Center in Seattle, the USA to help Korean residents and adopted children in the US learn about Korean culture each year since 2003.
